When we think about lipedema, our brain instantly thinks about fat storage, but what if we looked at it through the lens of inflammation instead? We can then move away from traditional fat loss methods to reduce lipedema related symptoms.

Here’s the thing, you are probably attempting those fat loss habits as we speak – staying active (good habit), dieting, and digging into a wellness trend such as cold therapy and saunas. This isn’t ‘fixing’ the issue which is frustrating. Inflammation is the body’s immune response that allows us to heal from injuries and/or illnesses when working correctly. However, chronic low-grade inflammation leads to changes in our tissue contributing to symptoms of lipedema such as swelling, pain and heaviness.

Researchers are now placing lipedema in a category related to metabolic and inflammatory conditions – no longer labeling it as fat storage.

Food sensitivities are delayed inflammatory reactions to certain foods (not to be confused with acute allergies). If you are consistently eating foods that trigger inflammation then you may be adding to symptoms of swelling, tenderness and fatigue.

Another thing to note is that different life stages, particularly in women affect lipedema with the largest flares occurring around times of puberty, pregnancy and menopause due to hormonal shifts.

During these times the body may also react more to certain foods. It would be worthwhile to track these food sensitivities and be mindful as to how they affect your lipedema.

A good place to start is with a food sensitivity test and potentially eliminating those foods from your diet. We also recommend exploring an anti-inflammatory diet filled with Omega-3 rich foods (fish and flax seeds), and colourful fruits and vegetables. You may also consider limiting sugar intake and seed oils to support your body.

Other helpful measures for reducing inflammation include hydration, gentle movements, compression garments and lymphatic drainage.
